Kerr Lake, Virginia

John H. Kerr Reservoir — known locally as Kerr Lake or Buggs Island Lake — straddles the Virginia–North Carolina border just south of Clarksville. Built in the 1950s for flood control and hydroelectric power, it grew into one of the most beloved recreation lakes in the Southeast. The lake stretches 39 miles up the Roanoke River, with coves, inlets, and wooded shoreline that feel more remote than the drive suggests.

For property buyers, Kerr Lake offers something rare: deep-water frontage, four seasons of recreational use, and a community that takes the lake seriously — without the price premium of the Chesapeake Bay or the crowds of Smith Mountain Lake.

The History

How Kerr Lake came to be

John H. Kerr Reservoir was born from a flood. After devastating floods swept the Roanoke River valley in August 1940 — among the worst in Virginia's recorded history — Congress authorized the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to dam the river. Construction began in March 1947 with 2,100 men working around the clock. The dam was completed in 1952 at a cost of over $82 million, standing 144 feet high with a crest length of 2,785 feet and containing 624,000 cubic yards of concrete.

The reservoir was originally called the Buggs Island Project, named after a small island belonging to descendants of Samuel Bugg. In 1951, Congress renamed it after John H. Kerr, the North Carolina Congressman who spent decades lobbying for its construction. Today the dam generates over 426,000 megawatt hours of electricity annually and has prevented an estimated $400 million in flood damage since completion.

Virginia International Raceway

One of America's finest road courses sits just 40 minutes from Kerr Lake in Alton, Virginia. VIR opened in 1957 and today hosts IMSA, Trans-Am, MotoAmerica, and amateur track days on a 3.27-mile natural terrain circuit. The 1,300-acre property is a full motorsport resort — with lodging, karting, skeet shooting, and dining on site.
